#9 UNE routs Morrisville State, 10-2

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Ten different players scored as the #9 University of New England men's ice hockey team defeated Morrisville State College, 10-2, in non-conference action at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday afternoon.
 
UNE (11-3) scored four times in each of the first two periods and the teams traded goals in the third. Chad Merrell started things off with his third of the season early in the opening period. Brett Mecrones and Jake Fuss added scores within 36 seconds of each other later in the frame. Derek Mecrones tallied a power play goal to as the Nor'easters led 4-0 after one.
 
Ryan Bloom continued the onslaught to start the second with his team-leading eighth of the season in the opening minute of the second. Dimitris Jones fired a slap shot from the blue line that hit the crossbar and went in to extend the lead to 6-0. Liam Darcy and Jovan Zimmerman each recorded their first goals of the season to make in 8-0 through two periods.
 
Jared Christy took the puck coast-to-coast for a goal in the third. The Mustangs (8-7) finally broke through on a power play score at the 11:41 mark of the period by Rich Hart. Just 24 seconds later, Mathieu Gervais answered for the Nor'easters with the first of his career. Ben Sprague add another on a power play late for Morrisville State.
 
A total of 17 out of the Nor'easters' 19 skaters recorded a point, led by D.Mecrones (1G, 2A) and Bloom (1G, 2A) with three points each. Liam Neuman, Austin Morgan, Tyler Glennon, Collin Heinold, and Brent Hill had two assists apiece.
 
Bryan McGrath made 30 saves for UNE to capture his second victory in net. Owen Liskiewicz started in goal for the Mustangs but was pulled after allowing three goals in just 9:43. Jared Young made 14 stops and allowed four goals before leaving. Jorgen Johnson had 16 stops over the final 32:59.
 
The Nor'easters will play their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Colby at 7 p.m.
