BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's rugby team kicked off its 2019 season on Sunday with three 10s matches each against New England College and Castleton.
The Nor'easters rolled to victories of 37-0, 34-10, and 41-0 against the Pilgrims to open the day.
Mariah Chase scored two tries in each of the three matches and finished with 12 tackles against NEC.
Alyssa Ehrenfried recorded a try in each match.
Emme MacDonald paced the UNE offense in the finale with three second-half scores.
UNE took two of three against Castleton, winning 19-5 and 12-0, before falling in the final match of the day 24-5. After trailing 5-0 to start the opening match, the Nor'easters scored the final three tries, two by
Katie Berger, to claim the victory.
After a scoreless first half,
Ashleigh Jackson and
Melissa Smith each tallied tries to give UNE a victory in the second match. Berger scored early in the final match, but the Nor'easters were unable to hold on as the Spartans took control. Tovah Coe scored twice for the visitors in the win.
Ehrenfried recorded six tackles to lead the defense against Castleton.
The Nor'easters continue the season on Saturday, Sept. 14 at home against the University of Maine (Club) at 3 p.m.
