BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Katie George struck three times in the last 13 minutes as No.1 Middlebury College extended a one-goal cushion into a 5-1 result against the University of New England field hockey squad on Sunday afternoon (Sep. 8) at UNE Blue Bolt Field.
The Panthers (3-0) netted goals midway through the 1st quarter and late in the 2nd frame to get out in front, and maintained the two-goal spread entering the final period. The Nor'easters (1-3) managed to split the difference 59 seconds into the 4th with a score by
Kate Lindmark, but George started adding the insurance 64 ticks later.
George also assisted on the opening tally by Danielle Brown, who later setup George on the fourth marker. Audrey Lazar found the back of the cage for Middlebury's second goal.
UNE goalie
Liz Sargent had a busy day against the two-time reigning national champions, as the Panthers amassed a 26-6 advantage in shot attempts. Sargent's 12 saves were one away from matching her career high, and the same number as last season's contest versus Middlebury.
Lindmark's goal for the hosts was UNE's first in four all-time meetings with the Panthers.
Jillian Lachapelle registered an assist on the play, that began with Lindmark inserting a corner.
For Middlebury, Grace Harlan had a pair of stops between the pipes.
The challenging non-conference slate for the Nor'easters continues on Tuesday with a visit to No.14 Babson College.
