FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The University of New England women's rugby team competed in three matches against tough competition at the Sacred Heart Pioneers 7's Tournament in Farfield, Conn. on Saturday.
In their first match of the day, the Nor'easters fell narrowly to Mount St. Mary's 7-5.
Jenni Laferriere scored the lone try to put UNE in front 5-0 at the half. The Mountaineers answered with a try and conversion in the second half to hold on for the win.
Molloy earned a 24-12 win over the Nor'easters in the second match of the day. The Lions jumped in front 19-0 by the 3:33 mark of the second half.
Emma Foss and Laferriere each scored tries in the final minute, but UNE was unable to mount the comeback.
The Nor'easters fell to eventual tournament champion Army, 38-19, in their final match of the afternoon. The Black Knights built a 33-0 lead before UNE scored three straight tries to cut the deficit to 33-19. Army added a late try as time expired. Adams, Foss, and
Kierstin Stritch all scored for UNE.
Zoe Adams led the Nor'easters with 12 total tackles on the afternoon, including a tournament-best six against Molloy, to go with three conversion kicks.
Sydney Rees added nine tackles.
UNE returns to action on Saturday at the Polar Bear 7's hosted by Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
