Second-half run leads UNE to CCC victory over WNEU, 18-15

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New England outscored Western New England 11-8 in the second half to earn an 18-15 victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's lacrosse action at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
 
After a back-and-forth first half that saw six ties and four lead changes, Nichole Carvalho scored 45 seconds into the second half to give UNE a lead at 8-7 that it would not relinquish. She added another score soon after and Julia Benjamin tallied a goal to put the Nor'easters in front 10-7 with 23:56 to play, the largest lead for either team to that point.
 
Western New England (4-5, 1-2 CCC) would not go down easily, scoring three of the next four goals, including two by Kristen Breen, to close the gap to 11-10. Five different Nor'easters added goals as UNE went on a 5-1 run to open its greatest margin of the afternoon at 16-11 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
 
UNE (5-5, 2-0 CCC) would maintain a five-goal advantage until the Golden Bears put in two in the final minute of the game.
 
Carvalho led the Nor'easters with five points on four goals and an assist. Molly Camelo added four goals, five draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Anna Stowell and Keara Dwyer each score three times. Julia Langlois was stellar on defense with a game-high four caused turnovers.
 
Breen scored five goals for the Golden Bears while Liz Mazza and Eileen Ruby added two each.
 
Shots were fairly even with Western New England holding a 44-40 advantage overall. Taylor Hopkins evened her record in goal with 13 saves. Kaitlyn Marchant made 15 stops for WNEU in the losing effort.
 
The Nor'easters continue CCC play at home on Tuesday against Wentworth at 4 p.m.
