BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with a 10-8 win over the University of Southern Maine on Thursday afternoon at UNE Blue Bolt Field.
The Nor'easters trailed 2-1 with 8:28 to play in the first half, but a five-goal spurt that spanned less than five minutes on either side of the intermission put the hosts ahead for good.
Casey Conwell had both of her goals late in the first to give UNE a 3-2 lead at the break.
Southern Maine trailed by four entering the final two minutes when Aliza Jordan upped her goal total to five with scores at 1:54 and 1:18, but the vistors could not get any closer against the Nor'easter defense.
Molly Camelo paced UNE with three goals and an assist, to go with game-highs of six ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Keara Dwyer added two goals and an assist.
Taylor Hopkins had six saves in goal.
Hala Van Nostrand stopped seven shots for the Huskies.
UNE returns to the field on Saturday at home against Maine Maritime Academy. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
