NEW LONDON, N.H. – The fourth-seed University of New England defeated top-seed Colby-Sawyer, 25-24, in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) DIII Semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Mercer Field.
UNE scored in the first minute of the match as
Katie Berger found the try zone.
Mariah Chase hit the conversion kick as the Nor'easters led 7-0. Colby-Sawyer quickly answered with a try by Sydney Jackson and conversion by Julia Anhalt in the 4
th minute.
Colby Williams put UNE back in the front in the 19
th minute, but a missed kick made the score 12-7. Anhalt scored a try and converted to put the Chargers in the front at 14-12 at the 20:39 mark of the first. Chase nailed a free kick late in the half to the UNE ahead 15-14 at the break.
Following another try by Jackson to begin the second half, Chase hit another free kick to trim the deficit to 19-18. Erin Wholey recorded a try in the 67
th minute, but the kick was missed as the Chargers held on to a 24-18 lead.
Madison DeRosa broke through for a try in the 69
th minute to trim the lead to one. Chase converted on the kick, lifting the Nor'easters in front for good.
The Nor'easters advance to the NIRA DIII Championship against second-seed Bowdoin on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
