BRUNSWICK, Maine – No.11 University of New England skated to a 5-2 victory over Bowdoin College in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Watson Arena on Tuesday evening.
The Nor'easters (6-2) set the tone with a goal just 13 seconds into play as
Brett Mecrones finished a give-and-go from
Tyler Seltenreich. Mecrones assisted on
Brent Hill's team-leading sixth goal to give UNE at 2-0 lead after a period.
Chris Jones extended the lead to 3-0 with 12:43 to play in the second period.
Jeff Eppright added a power play goal later in the frame.
Two penalties by the Nor'easters led to a 5-on-3 situation for the Polar Bears (1-3) near the midway point of the third period. Bowdoin made the most its opportunity as Ethan Kimball and Max Ginsberg scored just 34 seconds apart to trim the deficit to 4-2.
Seltenreich tallied the third UNE power play goal of the night with just over a minute remaining. The junior, along with Jones, Mecrones, and
Ryan Bloom, each had two points in the victory.
Ben Churchfield made 18 saves for the Nor'easters, who out-shot the Polar Bears 28-20 on the night. Alex Zafonte had 23 stops for the hosts.
UNE returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 30) at home against Southern Maine at 4 p.m.
