LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of New England junior Jake Hickey crossed the line in the 154th position at the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship, which was contested Saturday morning (Nov. 23) at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.

Hickey was just past the midway number in the field of 279, which included 32 teams of seven runners and 56 individuals. His 8K time of 25:48.9 was 1:35 off the top pace set by the winner, Patrick Watson of Stevenson University (24:13.9).

The race was so tightly packed that between Hickey and 44th place (25:04.7) there were only two instances of consecutive runners being separated by more than a second (1.8 and 1.4).

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) captured the team competition with a score of 164, ahead of North Central College (Ill.) at 182 and Williams College at 183.

Hickey secured his bid by being one of the top seven individuals at the New England Championship race last weekend that ultimately were not already part of a qualifying team. He is the first UNE runner, male or female, to reach the national championship. Before today, Hickey had won seven of 13 career events, including a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) titles, and his All-New England performance was also a first for the men's program.
