EVERETT, Mass. –
Ryan Burr scored a power play goal for #11 University of New England with 7:13 left to play to lead the Nor'easters to a 5-4 victory and weekend sweep of Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Allied Veterans Rink on Saturday.
The teams went back-and-forth all night and the Nor'easters took control first on a power play goal by
Dimitris Jones off assists from
Ryan Bloom and
Jared Christy. Georgy Gorodetsky answered back for the Leopards with 2:47 to play in the first period with his third goal of the season to make the score 1-1 after one.
Wentworth grabbed a lead to start the second as Carter Stephenson scored just 1:17 into play.
Jeff Eppright quickly responded for UNE 1:50 later with his second goal in as many nights.
Austin Morgan and
Justin Dixson helped on the tying goal. The Leopards pulled back ahead at the 13:29 mark on a tally by Joey O'Leary, but the Nor'easters responded once again with a marker by
Brendan Donohue knotting the score 3-3 through two.
Chad Merrell and Burr assisted on the play.
Collin Heinold put in the first of his career on a power play from Jones and Bloom to put the Nor'easters back in front 4-3 early in the third. Stephenson scored his second of the night to tie the game with 10:51 to play. A hooking penalty by Gorodetsky gave UNE an extra man before Burr tallied the winner from
Liam Darcy and
Jake Fuss.
The Leopards pulled their goaltender and were able to get a shot off, but Donohue blocked the only chance.
Ben Churchfield stopped 32 shots in the win. Thomas Draper made 28 saves on the night for Wentworth, who outshot UNE 36-33 overall.
UNE returns to action at home against Endicott on Friday (Nov. 22) at 7 p.m.
