GORHAM, Maine – The University of New England women's ice hockey team kicked off the 2019-20 season with a 3-0 win over Southern Maine on Friday afternoon at USM Ice Arena.
The Nor'easters scored twice on special teams in the second period to break the game open.
Tatum Gietl tallied the first goal on a power play 8:25 into the period.
Jessica Tolzman and
Abbi Charvat assisted on the goal.
Jenna Pych put UNE in front 2-0 with a four-on-four goal with 5:23 to play off helpers from
Bella Crugnale and
Meghan Hamilton.
Crugnale added a goal of her own in the third period.
McKenna Remillard and Hamilton assisted on the final score.
Julia Benjamin made 22 saves to earn the shutout in goal. Whitney Padgett also stopped 22 shots for the Huskies. The Nor'easters killed off all six of USM's power play opportunities, including four in the third period.
UNE returns to the ice on Friday, Nov. 15 in Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) action at Nichols at 3:40 pm.
