BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Kristen McCarthy put home a feed from Jaylin Grabau with just over three minutes gone in overtime to lift Endicott College past the University of New England, 2-1, in a matchup of the top field hockey squads in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 2) at UNE Blue Bolt Field.
The Gulls move in front of the Nor'easters with the result, improving to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in league play. With its first setback in five outings, UNE now stands at 5-6 on the year (4-1 CCC).
The hosts had narrow advantages in shots (5-3) and penalty corners (4-2) through a scoreless opening half, before Endicott came out strong the in the 3rd quarter. The Gulls forced UNE goalie
Liz Sargent into six saves in the first five minutes after the break, and a loose rebound in the crease allowed Addi Williams to crash the net to give the visitors an edge.
The Nor'easters answered about nine minutes later on a tally by
Kendra MacDonald, who carried in from the right and flicked a backhanded shot through a crowd from just inside the arc.
MacDonald registered the only shot for either side in the 4th frame, which EC goalie Taylor Farrin denied to extend the game past regulation.
The deciding marker came as Grabau tracked down a lead-pass up the left wing and maintained possession all the way to the near post, before centering a pass to McCarthy on the doorstep.
Endicott finished with a 15-10 cushion in shot attempts and ahead 7-4 in corners. Farrin backstopped the win with four saves.
Sargent turned away eight for UNE, which visits Gordon College on Saturday morning.
Hannah Cohen also contributed a defensive save for the Nor'easters in the waning moments of the 3rd period.
