Mecrones scores twice in 3-3 tie with Plymouth State

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The #11 University of New England men's ice hockey team battled from behind twice to come away with a 3-3 tie at the Harold Alfond Forum on Friday night.
 
Brett Mecrones held off three Panther defenders to put the Nor'easters on the board 2:26 into the opening period. UNE would remain in front through the first intermission.
 
Plymouth State jumped ahead in the second period on with two quick goals by Ryan Stevens and Simon Besner. Jason Harmon knotted the score at 2-2 with a short-handed goal, his first of the season midway through the second.
 
The Panthers added a power-play score off the stick of Michael Covach to start the third. Mecrones forced a turnover in the Nor'easters offensive zone and added his second goal of the game to bring the score even with 12:44 to play in regulation.
 
The Nor'easters had a late power-play opportunity, but were unable to break through. Plymouth State outshot UNE 4-3 in overtime.
 
Shots favored the Nor'easters 44-34 on the night. Evan Morelli turned away 41 shots while Ben Churchfield had 31 saves for the hosts.
 
UNE heads to Buffalo State on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
