Teddy Bear Toss Goal

BIDDEFORD, Maine
– A goal by Jessica Pele with just over five minutes remaining proved to be the difference as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team defeated the University of New England, 2-1, in a Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) matchup at the Harold Alfond Forum on Friday.

After a scoreless first period, Ashley Gilles put the Kangaroos (8-7-3, 3-2-0 CHC) on the board in the second as Sarah Kosnaskie stole the puck in UNE's defensive zone and slipped a pass to Gilles for the lead.

UNE (13-5-1, 4-2-1 CHC) got even later in the frame, when Jessie Scott stuffed home a rebound at the right post. Marykate Drinkwater and Kyra Yu assisted on the tying goal.

Pele tipped one top-shelf off a blue-line blast by Kelly Leathem for the game-winner.

Brooke Susac stopped 19 shots for SUNY Canton, which out-shot the Nor'easters 28-20 on the day. Julia Benjamin made 26 saves for the hosts.

The teams return to the Forum ice tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
