#15 Bowdoin gets past UNE in OT, 2-1

Statistics

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Kara Finnerty scored off a feed from Abby Bashaw with 3:05 remaining in overtime to lift No.15 Bowdoin College to a 2-1 field hockey result against the University of New England on Wednesday night (Sep. 5) at Ryan Field.

After a clearance by the Nor'easters, Bashaw carried possession back into the right side of the circle and sent a cross into the middle. Finnerty trapped it, reversed her stick, and sent the deciding tally inside the left post.

The Polar Bears (1-0) had a breakaway chance moments earlier, but UNE goalie Liz Sargent stood tall for the save.

It was a tale of two halves during regulation, with Bowdoin holding advantages in shots (11-3) and penalty corners (7-1) in the opening period. The hosts broke through in the 29th minute on a goal by Elizabeth Growney.

The Nor'easters (0-2) came to life in the 2nd frame, finishing with a 7-4 edge in shots while recording all seven corners. On the sixth try, with 4:06 to go, Kersey Boulay gathered the insert and slipped a behind-the-back pass to her sister, Reanna Boulay, who drove her first collegiate marker into the left side of the cage for the equalizer.

Maddie Ferrucci made seven stops between the pipes for the Polar Bears to earn the decision.

Sargent totaled 10 saves for UNE, which had captured last season's meeting in Biddeford by a 1-0 margin, also in overtime. It was the program's best win over a ranked squad (No.11), and brought an end to Bowdoin's 64-game unbeaten streak versus non-conference opponents.

The Nor'easters will now hit the road this weekend for dates against No.11 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Saturday, 11 a.m.) and No.1 Middlebury College (Sunday, 12 p.m.).
