BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Second-half goals by Emily Hogan and Merel van Gijzen lifted Colby College to a 2-0 field hockey result against the University of New England on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 21) at UNE Blue Bolt Field.

The teams played a scoreless opening period, with just one shot apiece finding the target, before Hogan put the visitors ahead in the 38th minute. Eliza Mell sent a cross into the middle from the right side, and Hogan slid it under the shifting UNE goalie.

The Mules (8-6) built on the advantage in the 46th minute, when van Gijzen worked herself free from defensive pressure at the top of the circle and drove one into the left side.

Colby finished with an 11-4 cushion in total shots, while the Nor'easters held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.

Riley Whitmyer made two stops for the shutout in goal for the Mules. Her counterpart for UNE (10-8), Liz Sargent, posted three saves.

The Nor'easters (9-1 CCC) are on the road for a Commonwealth Coast Conference date with Gordon College (1-9 CCC) on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
