Gardiner pushes UNE past Nichols in OT, 1-0

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Marge Gardiner notched her first goal of the season moments after time expired in the first overtime period, as the University of New England secured a 1-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey victory over Nichols College on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 16) at UNE Blue Bolt Field.

The Nor'easters earned a penalty corner in the final seconds of the extra session, and Gardiner received the insert at the top of the arc. She left it for Kersey Boulay, who then slid it around a defender to Gardiner on the right for a shot through a crowd into the near side.

UNE (9-7, 8-1 CCC) generated a 21-4 advantage in shot attempts during the contest, putting 11 on-target. Brooke Misbach turned away eight for Nichols (7-7, 3-6 CCC), and got the support of defensive saves by Maggie Noelk (34th minute) and MacKenzie McDonald (72nd minute).

For the hosts, Liz Sargent registered her second shutout of the year with two saves -- both in the last 21 minutes of action.

The Nor'easters, who booked a home semifinal in the upcoming conference championship with the result, have now taken the last 13 meetings versus the Bison.

UNE is slated to entertain two games this weekend, with Salve Regina University on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Colby College on Sunday (1 p.m.).
