BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Wesleyan University (Conn.) netted a pair of power-play goals before the midway mark of the 1st period on the way to a 2-1 women's ice hockey decision against the University of New England on Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 2) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Both tallies were redirected in front, as Sarah Goss sent pucks towards the cage from the blue line. At 5:24 it was Alex Horton that put the Cardinals (3-4-2) on the board, followed almost three minutes later by Sydnee Goyer.

The Nor'easters (4-4-5) split the deficit in half with 22 seconds left in the 1st, when Michaela McLaughlin led Katie Babineau up the left boards on a break and Babineau pegged the upper-right corner upon entering the zone.

UNE's search for the tying goal was hampered by three penalties in the 3rd, but a flurry of tries in the waning seconds resulted in a penalty shot with just 1.0 on the clock. Wesleyan goalie Sam Smith stood her ground, however, to preserve the result for the visitors.

Smith closed with 27 saves, while her counterpart for the Nor'easters, Caty Flagg, recorded 36 stops, including 19 during the last 20 minutes.

UNE will be back on the Forum ice to entertain Becker College on Saturday (4 p.m.).
