Colby clips UNE in non-league contest

Statistics

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Merel van Gijzen scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute to give Colby College a 1-0 field hockey win over the University of New England on Tuesday night (Sep. 26) at Bill Alfond Field.

The Mules improve to 5-2 on the year with their fourth straight victory. The Nor'easters slip back to 6-3 overall.

Quality scoring chances were limited both ways, as Colby ended with a 10-8 edge in total shot attempts, and penalty corners were even at five apiece.

The respective goalies -- Riley Whitmyer for the home side, and Liz Sargent of UNE -- each came up with a handful of key saves to keep the game close.

The Nor'easters get back into Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Friday (4 p.m.) at Nichols College.
