BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England scored six times after intermission to cruise to an 8-0 victory over Gordon College in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey opener on Wednesday afternoon (Sep. 13) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Nor'easters (3-1, 1-0 CCC) have now taken the last seven meetings against the Fighting Scots (1-2, 0-1 CCC). It was the largest margin of result in 24 games of the all-time series with Gordon, and tied for the fourth-most tallies against a conference foe in 149 games.

Vonde Saunders was one of three players for the hosts to pocket two goals on the day. Her second marker made it 5-0 in the 44th minute, while also moving the senior into the top spot on UNE's career goals list at 53, past Nicole Matarozzo '17.

After Saunders' six-point performance (also 2 assists), Hannah Buckley and Liz Clark netted a pair [Watch Buckley 1 / Watch Buckley 2]. Clark's initial score put the Nor'easters in front during the 12th minute [Watch].

Olivia Madore added a goal and one assist, and Grace Grenier got on the board for her first collegiate marker [Watch]. Sydney Liptak, Kendra MacDonald, and Morgan Kelley each registered an assist in support.

Backstopping UNE was Liz Sargent, who made six saves for her first shutout, with the aid of a defensive save by Kersey Boulay in the opening period.

In the cage for Gordon, which was out-shot by a 29-10 margin, Julia Altman posted 11 stops during 59:18 of work. Jasmine Rosa turned away two shots the rest of the way, and Briana Kowolenko contributed a 1st-half defensive save.

The Nor'easters, slotted as the fourth squad also receiving votes in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Top 20 Poll, will continue league action on Saturday (1 p.m.) against Roger Williams University.
