Hirschfeld, Gallagher power No. 16 Bowdoin past UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Hannah Hirschfeld and Kelsey Gallagher combined for nine goals as the Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team defeated the University of New England, 20-7, in a non-conference match played Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 7) at the Big Blue Turf.

The 16th-ranked Polar Bears improved to 2-0 in the early going, while UNE suffered its first setback to drop to 2-1.

Hirschfield tallied a match-high five goals to lead the way for Bowdoin. Gallagher contributed four goals and three assists for a seven-point afternoon. Annie Glenn (3 assists) and Mettler Growney added two goals apiece.

Jocelyn Davee scored three times to lead all UNE players. Anna Stowell scored twice, and Brooke Kelleher and Megan O'Grady rounded out the scoring for the Nor'easters.

Bowdoin opened up an 8-1 advantage midway through the first frame and never looked back. The Polar Bears led 12-4 at intermission and were able to get into a running-clock situation in the second half after opening up a double-digit lead.

Kayli Weiss and Erin Morrissey split time in goal for Bowdoin, Weiss made three saves in the first stanza to register the win. The Polar Bears held a sizeable margin (20-9) in draw controls, including a game-high eight from Glenn.

Maritza Nary came up with 12 stops for UNE. Defender Jolena Lampron was credited with three ground balls and three draw controls.

The Nor'easters return to action Thursday with a 4 p.m. non-conference home match versus the University of Southern Maine.
