Fast start sends UNE towards 17-11 win against SJC

PORTLAND, Maine -- The University of New England raced out to a 9-0 cushion through 16 minutes of action in a 17-11 women's lacrosse victory over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) in the season-opener on Wednesday evening (Mar. 1) at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

SJC countered with the next five goals to erase more than half (9-5) of the deficit, but the Monks could not get any closer the rest of the way.

Korinne Bohunsky did a little bit of everything for the Nor'easters (1-0), with four goals, two assists, eight draw controls, and four caused turnovers. Anna Stowell shared the team-high scoring output with four markers of her own, and Nichole Carvalho supported with three tallies.

UNE received two more goals out of Brooke Kelleher, and one apiece from Jocelyn Davee, Kasey Rubenstein, Kimberly Gosselin, and Olivia Carpenter. Davee also secured four draws and three caused turnovers.

In goal for the visitors, Maritza Nary posted 13 saves.

Saint Joseph's (0-1) got four-goal efforts from Elyse Caiazzo and Kara Kelly, while Caiazzo and Jackie Wilson combined for 14 draw controls (8 and 6). Micary Verville had three caused turnovers, and Kaylin Mansir stopped 13 shots between the pipes.

UNE will return to Biddeford for its home-opener this weekend against Castleton University.
