BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's swimming team topped both Husson University (198-54) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine (183-75) in a double-dual meet Saturday afternoon (Nov. 11) at the Campus Center Pool.
Leading the way for the Nor'easters was
Kayla Burgess,
McKenna Riley,
Taryn Leach, and
MiKayla Sargent, who each won two events.
Faith Belleavoine made UNE's victory total nine out of the 12 individual races.
The other three solo efforts went to Rose Baillie of Saint Joseph's, while the home team cleaned up in both relay competitions.
Burgess was tops in the 1000 freestyle (11:56.69) and 400 IM (5:08.55). Sargent claimed the 500 freestyle (5:54.55) and the 200 freestyle (2:13.42), which was first of five races featuring a winning margin of less than one second (0.14).
Riley touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke (1:06.31) and 50 backstroke (30.89); the gap in the 50 was 0.50 seconds faster than teammate
Melissa Jakubowski. Leach took first place in the 100 butterfly (1:05.36), and her 29.87 in the 50 butterfly narrowly edged fellow UNE swimmers
Jocelyn Hutchinson (0.06) and
Kelsey Moulton (0.76).
Moulton was also 0.34 back of Baillie in the 50 freestyle -- the first of two close endings. In the 100 freestyle, Baillie bested UNE'sÂ
Haleigh Kology by 0.78 seconds.
Belleavoine posted 1:17.32 to take the 100 breaststroke for the Nor'easters.
