Nor'easters blitz nationally-ranked Colby, 7-2, on Teddy Bear Toss Night

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Andrew Slotnick scored a pair of goals to fuel an impressive offensive showing for the University of New England, as the Nor'easters defeated Colby College, 7-2, in a non-conference men's ice hockey game in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 888 at the Harold Alfond Forum Saturday night (Jan. 28).

The Nor'easters improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight starts to up their record to 10-6-2. The 14th-ranked Mules fell to 7-5-4 on the season. The victory was the first-ever for UNE over Colby (1-4-1 all-time) and produced the Nor'easters' third double-digit win output in school history.

Blaise Healy, Ryan Bloom, Brady Fleurent, Trevor Fleurent and Armand Uomoleale had a goal apiece for UNE, while Michael Rudolf (and Mario Benicky did the scoring for Colby.

The game would remain scoreless until 16:36 of the first when Slotnick collected a pass from Danny Antonoff and skated down the slot to beat Colby goaltender Sean Lawrence and send a shower of teddy bears onto the ice on UNE's Teddy Bear Toss Night at the Alfond Forum [WATCH]. Ian Rodden started the play deep in UNE's defensive zone for the secondary assist.

Healy made it 2-0 with a power-play goal less than two minutes later to close out the first-period scoring [WATCH]. Dylan Bengtson recorded his 14th assist of the season on the goal.

The Nor'easters would score two more goals in the second frame to break open the game. Slotnick tallied at the 15:56 mark, breaking in on the left side and firing the puck just inside the far post for his first collegiate two-goal game [WATCH]. Antonoff and Dmitris Jones had assists. Less than a minute later it was Bloom roofing a shot after playing give-and-go with Brady Fleurent [WATCH]. 

Brady Fleurent (assisted by Jones and Trevor Fleurent) made it 5-0 at 4:29 of the third period, poking home the puck from close range [WATCH].

Colby would get into the scoring column while on a power play a minute later when Rudolph one-timed a feed by Phil Klitirinos from behind the goal.

Benicky took advantage of a beautiful pass from Jack Burton to tally the Mules' second goal, which came at 11:26 of the third before Trevor Fleurent and Uomoleale each added a goal in the final 3:42 to account for the final margin [WATCH / WATCH]. Brady Fleurent and Bloom assisted on the first goal, and Christian Rossetti assisted on the final one.

Tate Sproxton had a strong game in goal for UNE, coming up with 31 saves, including a series of great stops late in the second period [WATCH]. Lawrence totaled 28 stops for Colby, which a home game versus Fitchburg State tomorrow afternoon (3 p.m.).

The Nor'easters will host Salve Regina University for a 7 p.m. Commonwealth Coast Conference game on Thursday.
