Box Score
BEVERLY, Mass. -- University of New England first-year
Ryan Bloom won a neutral-zone face-off, split a pair of defenders, and beat the Endicott goaltender on the glove side with 3.3 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Nor'easters a 4-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over the 12th-ranked Gulls on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 21) at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.
The reigning CCC Player and Rookie of the Week, Bloom rescued UNE after Endicott rallied with a pair of third-period goals to force overtime.
The victory improves the Nor'easters' overall mark to 8-6-2 and 5-4-2 in conference play. Endicott saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end in falling to 12-3-2 (6-3-1 CCC).
In addition to Bloom's game-winner, UNE received goals from
Brady Fleurent,
Trevor Fleurent and
Tucker Ross. Ross Olsson, Logan Day and Carter Horwitz tallied for the Gulls.
Brady Fleurent's goal was the lone marker of the first period, staking the Nor'easters to a 1-0 lead at the 11:14 mark. The strike came with UNE on a power play and was assisted by Bloom and
Trevor Fleurent.
After Olsson's goal at 8:25 of the second tied the score,
Trevor Fleurent notched his team-leading 13th goal just over a minute later. Bloom and
Brady Fleurent assisted on the play.
UNE would double its lead with just over a minute remaining in the frame when Ross scored a power-play goal, which was set-up by
Ryan Burr and
Dylan Bengtson.
The hosts would rally in the third period, however, using goals by Day and Horwitz in the initial 8:32 of the frame to tie the score and send the contest into an extra five-minute period.
It appeared as if the two teams would play to their second 3-3 tie of the season, but
Trevor Fleurent made a spectacular defensive play to set-up a center-ice face-off with eight seconds remaining. Bloom's improbable individual effort on the draw sent UNE home winners while halting the nation's longest current winning streak.
Tate Sproxton made 38 saves in goal for UNE, which returns to action Thursday at home versus Western New England University.
For Endicott, goaltender Kevin Aldridge had 30 stops.
