No. 2 Polar Bears strike late to best UNE, 3-1

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Juliana Fiore converted a penalty stroke with 12 minutes remaining to put No. 2 Bowdoin College in front of the University of New England, on the way to a 3-1 field hockey decision on Wednesday evening (Sep. 7) at Ryan Field.

Kara Finnerty added an insurance marker with 1:26 left for the Polar Bears (1-0), who were the national runners-up last season.

Bowdoin finished with a 18-1 advantage in shots and 12-0 cushion in penalty corners.

The contest was tied more more than 30 minutes in the middle, following an equalizing goal by UNE's Vonde Saunders with 7:31 to go in the opening period.

The home side got on the board in the 5th minute, as a corner play settled to Elizabeth Bennewitz for a drive from the top of the circle. Fiore and Kimmy Ganong found assists right then; Bennewitz later helped on Finnerty's tally.

Holly Smith made eight saves for the Nor'easters (2-1), who next visit MIT on Saturday (1 p.m.).
