WENHAM, Mass. --
Nicole Matarozzo scored a goal in each half to help the University of New England on its way to a 4-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey triumph over Gordon College on Wednesday afternoon (Sep. 28) at the Brigham Athletic Complex.
The Nor'easters won for the sixth consecutive outing, improving to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in league action. Big Blue, which remained just outside of the latestÂ
Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Top 20 Poll (the second team also receiving votes), has now topped the Fighting Scots (3-6, 0-4 CCC) in five straight meetings.
With the two tallies, Matarozzo moves into second place on UNE's career goals list (41), passing the 40 held by both Casey Clark '13 and Bree Tupper '11.
After the senior forward put UNE on the board in the 15th minute,
Becky Zakorchemny knocked in a cross from
Hannah Buckley in the 24th minute to make it 2-0.
Things stayed that way until the 52nd minute when Matarozzo converted her team-leading eighth marker off a pass from
Abbey Rouillard, and
Brooke Marshall finished the scoring with a blast in the 55th minute -- with an assist going to
Marge Gardiner.
For the match, Big Blue owned a 20-8 advantage in shots and 9-4 edge in penalty corners.
Holly Smith logged four saves in 61 minutes of work for the Nor'easters. On the opposite end, Shannon Hicks recorded 10 stops.
UNE plays the third of its four-game road trip on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Roger Williams University (2-2 CCC), before turning right around on Sunday with a visit to No. 19 Trinity College for a non-conference battle.
