MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- The University of New England piled up a 32-4 advantage in shots and came away from Salve Regina University with a 3-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey win on Saturday evening (Sep. 24) at Gaudet Field.
Winners of five in-a-row, the Nor'easters (7-1) now stand alone at 3-0 atop the league standings. A second straight setback leaves the Seahawks at 5-3 overall, 1-2 in the CCC.
It wasn't until the thirteenth shot of the 1st half that UNE broke onto the scoreboard in the 30th minute, as
Vonde Saunders collected a rebound in front and stuffed it home.
Nicole Matarozzo added an insurance marker in the 50th minute, guiding a tough-angle shot from the left side into the far corner. Then, in the 60th minute,
Hannah Buckley got a tip on a ball in the crease that was sent towards the target by
Kersey Boulay.
It took Salve Regina more than 38 minutes before recorded a shot attempt, and only put one on-goal for the match, which UNE goalie
Holly Smith calmly kicked away to notch her third shutout of the year.
Jessie Severino made 21 saves for the Seahawks, who had to battle through a 14-2 disadvantage in penalty corners.
The Nor'easters will visit Gordon College (0-3 CCC) on Wednesday (4 p.m.).
