BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters opened up an 11-1 lead in the first half on their way to an 18-2 Senior Day win over Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse match played Saturday afternoon (April 23) at the Big Blue Turf.
Winners of five of their last six games, the Nor'easters (10-5, 6-1 CCC) reached double digits in wins for the first time since the 2012 season when UNE posted a 12-5 mark. The Bison dropped their 11th consecutive decision to fall to 2-13 overall, 0-7 in conference play.
Katie Cawley scored five goals to pace UNE.
Jocelyn Davee and
Korinne Bohunsky each scored four times, while
Carly Sheehan contributed a hat-trick.
Kimberly Gosselin dished out three assists for the winners.
Brooke Marion and Alexa Smith got into the scoring column for Nichols.
After Bohunsky and Marion swapped goals in the early going, UNE would tally the next 10 markers of the half to lead 11-1 heading into intermission. Davee and Bohunsky scored three goals apiece in the frame.
The Nor'easters continued to breeze after halftime, outshooting the visitors 15-4 while netting seven goals.
Courtney Kendall and
Maritza Nary each played a half in goal for UNE and combined to make five stops.
Lauryn Huck led all players with five ground balls, and Bohunsky contributed three caused turnovers and three draw controls for the Nor'easters, who held a significant margin in shots (32-12), ground balls (26-15) and caused turnovers (17-3).
Nichols starting goalkeeper Katherine Cotton totaled six saves over the initial 48:37 before being relieved by Jacqueline Hogue, who registered one stop the rest of the way.
Both teams will wrap up the regular season Tuesday. The Bison host Wentworth Institute of Technology at 4 p.m., while UNE plays at Endicott College at 4 p.m. A victory in that contest would secure the No. 2 seed and an opening-round bye for the Nor'easters when the CCC Championship gets underway next Saturday.
