BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Jocelyn Davee broke an 8-8 tie on a free-position goal with 2:03 remaining to cap a rally from a four-goal deficit, and the University of New England held off Western New England University in the closing moments to earn a 10-9 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's lacrosse win Saturday afternoon (April 16) at the Big Blue Turf.
UNE (9-4, 5-1 CCC) continued its hot streak, winning for the fourth consecutive outing and eighth time in its last nine matches. Defending CCC champion Western New England dropped to 9-5 overall, 3-3 in conference play.
Davee scored a team-high three goals for the Nor'easters, while
Korinne Bohunsky,
Jolena Lampron and
Nicole Carvalho had two apiece.
Brooke Kumnick tallied a match-best five times to pace the Golden Bears. Ashley Brunner and Taylor Scialdone each added a pair of markers. Jill Traux was credited with six assists.
Trailing 8-4 with 20 minutes remaining, UNE scored six consecutive goals to rally for the win. Lampron and
Kimberly Gosselin scored 3:35 apart to cut the Nor'easters' deficit in half (8-6) with 16:17 on the clock. After a scoreless stretch of nearly eight minutes, Bohunsky made it 8-7 before Carvalho notched the equalizer two minutes later.
After Davee gave UNE the lead for good with 2:03 on the clock, Carvalho would add an insurance goal a minute later. That marker proved to be the game-winner, as Scialdone scored for Western New England with 0:12 left.
Courtney Kendall played a strong goal between the pipes for the Nor'easters, totaling 13 saves. Lampron added five caused turnovers and three draw controls, Bohunsky collected five draw controls, and Davee finished with five ground balls.
The Golden Bears received 12 stops from Shannon McFadden and four draw controls from Kumnick.
Both teams return to action Wednesday. UNE hosts ninth-ranked Colby College at 4:30 p.m., while Western New England entertains Curry College in a CCC match starting at 4 p.m.
