BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Julie Dachille scored a power-play goal with just under five minutes remaining to lift the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 2-1 victory over the University of New England Nor'easters in a non-league women's ice hockey game Friday night (Dec. 9) at Sid Watson Arena.
With the triumph the Polar Bears remain unbeaten at 4-0-2, while the Nor'easters now stand at 4-6-1.
Dachille's game-winner came off a rebound after UNE goaltender
Sydney Helmbrecht had saved a shot from the right point by Maegan Sheehan.
After a scoreless first period, Bowdoin had grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:21 of the middle frame when Madeline Hall converted a rebound after Helmbrecht had made a pair of stops with Bowdoin applying offensive pressure.
The Nor'easters drew even with less than two minutes remaining in the second.
Shannon Smith banked the puck off the boards, and
Gabby Crugnale collected it before skating into the Nor'easters' offensive zone and firing a wrist shot off of Bowdoin goaltender Sophia Lattanzio and into the cage. The marker was Crugnale's third power-play goal of the season.
Helmbrecht had a strong game in goal for UNE, finishing with 36 saves. Lattanzio earned the victory with 17 stops.
The Nor'easters will have less than 24 hours of rest before concluding first-semester play with a home game tomorrow versus Becker College. The puck will drop at 3 p.m. at the Harold Alfond Forum.
