BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After surrendering the opening goal, Franklin Pierce University scored five times over nearly 20 minutes spanning the 1st and 2nd periods to secure a 5-1 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey decision against the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters (1-3, 1-1 NEHC) got on the board first, as
Gabby Crugnale tipped-in a drive by
Mary Wirth at the 4:41 mark of the initial stanza.
Kierra Wright also assisted on the play.
With 2:59 left in the 1st, the Ravens (3-1, 2-1 NEHC) tied things up on a goal by Nina Danforth, with the help of Lanie Matsumoto and Delaney Guimont. A couple minutes later, FPU took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to get three other players onto the scoresheet, as Michelle Holmes put the finishing touches on the efforts of Alex Brolsma and Hailee Craig.
The visiting squad then netted three scores in the 2nd to seize control. First it was Matsumoto from Meg Gilbride and Brolsma just over six minutes into the frame, setting the margin at 3-1. With under four to play in the period, Gilbride and Danforth setup Katie Neuburger, before -- 41 ticks later -- Ariana Soldano popped home a pass from Kelsey Holmes.
Shannon O'Neil made 21 saves to earn the result for Franklin Pierce. On the other end for UNE,
Sydney Helmbrecht posted 17 stops in 40 minutes prior to Caty Flagg logging five in the 3rd.
The Nor'easters return to action on Friday (7 p.m.) when Salve Regina University comes into town.
