GORHAM, Maine --
Sydney Helmbrecht had 23 saves to register her eighth career shutout, as the University of New England women's ice hockey team blanked the University of Southern Maine, 2-0, in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game played Friday afternoon (Nov. 4) at the USM Ice Arena.
Marykate Drinkwater and
Annie Mullen supplied the offense for the Nor'easters, who earned their first win of the season (1-2, 1-0 NEHC). The Huskies dipped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
After a scoreless first period, Drinkwater opened the scoring after a shot by
Shannon Smith was blocked. Drinkwater came up with the puck and lifted a high shot into the cage for her first collegiate goal, which came 1:05 into the frame.
Mullen would provide the Nor'easters an insurance marker at 15:41 of the third when she converted a feed from
Melissa Boudreau, who had controlled the puck behind the goal.
Helmbrecht had 12 of her 23 stops in the final period to help make UNE's lead stand up. Brittney Evangelista totaled 25 stops for Southern Maine.
The Nor'easters will return to action tomorrow in their home-opener when they host Franklin Pierce University at 4 p.m.
