Senior Day Success: UNE claims regular-season title with 7-1 win over Salve

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Nicole Matarozzo scored three times to power the University of New England Nor'easters to a 7-1 triumph over Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match Saturday (Oct. 22) on Senior Day at the Big Blue Turf.

With the win the Nor'easters (15-2, 10-0 CCC) clinch their fourth consecutive CCC regular-season title. The setback drops Salve Regina to 8-8 overall, 4-6 in conference play.

Vonde Saunders added a pair goals to give her eight in the last five matches, while Kendra MacDonald and Brenna Sicard had one apiece for the Nor'easters.

UNE got off to a quick start, tallying three times in the initial 15 minutes of the match to seize control. Saunders sandwiched markers around one by Matarozzo to give the Nor'easters a 3-0 advantage [Watch 1, Watch 2, Watch 3]. 

Matarozzo would score her second of the afternoon in the 27th minute [Watch] before Erin Gendreau got the Seahawks on the scoreboard with 4:49 remaining in the frame.

After intermission it was MacDonald, Matarozzo and Sicard completing the scoring for UNE [Watch 5, Watch 6, Watch 7].

Saunders and Hannah Buckley contributed two assists apiece for the Nor'easters, who held a commanding 32-7 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper Holly Smith recorded the win with five saves.

Seahawk goalkeeper Jessie Severino had a busy afternoon in front the cage, totaling 15 stops. Emily Kahler added a defensive save for Salve Regina, which will play host to Nichols College on Wednesday (7 p.m.)

The Nor'easters will face No. 9 Babson College on Tuesday in a battle of the two top-ranked teams in the NCAA III New England East Region rankings. That match will get underway at 5 p.m. at the Big Blue Turf.
