Norwich tops UNE in a battle of nationally-ranked programs

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Cailtin Heale had two tries to lead the Norwich University Cadets to a 29-12 victory over the University of New England in a battle of nationally-ranked women's rugby teams on Senior Day Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Norwich (2-5) is ranked eighth in the most recent National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) poll, while the Nor'easters (4-2) hold down the 11th spot.

The match was a defensive battle at the outset, with UNE leading 7-5 midway through the first half. Genesis Bonilla got the Cadets on the board first (conversion failed), but Andrea Call responded for the Nor'easters with a try [Video Highlight]. The ensuing conversion by Emma Foss gave UNE the lead.

Heale would give Norwich the lead for good with 1:19 remaining with her first try of the afternoon. Sheila Decker followed with the conversion to give the visitors a 12-7 advantage heading into intermission.

Decker extended the Cadets' lead to 10 (17-7) early in the second half before Heather Baron tallied a try to get UNE back within five at 17-12 [Video Highlight].

Heale (Decker conversion) and Denisse Zambon added tries in the final 13:12 for the final margin of victory for Norwich.

Zoe Adams led the way defensively for the Nor'easters, racking up 19 tackles.  Amanda Sancomb and Jennifer Laferriere had 13 each, while Katie Gorenflo added 12.

Prior to the match, UNE honored seniors Gorenflo, Avery Kress and Emily Richard.

The Cadets return to action next Saturday when they host American International College. The Nor'easters are off until Oct. 29 when they conclude their regular season at Castleton University.
