1st-half barrage gives UNE a 6-0 victory over Roger Williams

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England notched all of its goals during a 16-minute span of the opening period, registering a 6-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey win over Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 15) at the Big Blue Turf.

Big Blue (13-2, 8-0 CCC) has come out on top in each of the nine all-time meetings against the Hawks (3-10, 3-6 CCC). The result marked a fourth straight triumph for the Nor'easters, who were the first team also receiving votes in the latest Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Top 20 Poll released on Tuesday.

Sydney Liptak chalked up her first tally of the year to begin the scoring in the 16th minute [Watch], and it wasn't long (18th minute) before Vonde Saunders doubled the advantage off a feed from Hannah Buckley [Watch]. Saunders posted another marker in the 22nd minute, and Buckley setup Nicole Matarozzo in the 24th to make it 4-0 [Watch].

In the 28th minute, Becky Zakorchemny put home a pass from Kendra MacDonald [Watch], and then it was Olivia Madore with the assist of Marge Gardiner in the 32nd minute to round out the offensive effort. Like Liptak, Madore's goal was her first on the season.

Holly Smith was needed for two saves in front of the UNE net during the initial 35 minutes, and Nicole Schena made five stops after halftime to preserve the shared shutout.

For Roger Williams, which was out-shot by a 29-10 margin and was similarly short in penalty corners (11-2), Mya Lunn recorded nine saves.

The Nor'easters will head to Western New England University (6-2 CCC) on Tuesday (4 p.m.), while the Hawks' next time out will be at Endicott College (6-2 CCC) that same evening (7 p.m.).
