BRISTOL, R.I. -- Scoreless through 29 minutes,
Kendra MacDonald pocketed her first two collegiate goals in a matter of seconds to start the University of New England towards a 6-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey victory over Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1) in the rain at Bayside Field.
Big Blue (9-1, 5-0 CCC), which remained just outside of the
Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Top 20 Poll (the second team also receiving votes) that was released earlier in the week, will now take a seven-game unbeaten streak into Sunday's match (12 p.m.) at No. 19 Trinity College.
The Nor'easters have captured each of the eight all-time meetings against the Hawks (2-6, 2-3 CCC).
In a span of 17 ticks, MacDonald gave her side the lead, first with an unassisted tally and then with the aid of
Vonde Saunders. And with 1:03 left before halftime,
Kersey Boulay made it 3-0 in favor of the visitors, redirecting a drive off the stick of
Brenna Sicard. Shots were 11-1 in the period.
UNE wasted little time (1:34) increasing the cushion in the 2nd stanza, as
Hannah Buckley converted the first attempt of the frame off an assist from
Olivia Madore. Saunders then scored in the 45th minute to make it 5-0.
Starting goalie
Holly Smith played the initial 47 minutes and did not need to make a save to earn the decision for Big Blue.
Roger Williams got on the board in the 49th minute, as Meghan Curran found the back of the net with an assist by Alex Coppinger.
Just 18 seconds later, though,
Becky Zakorchemny converted a pass from
Kyla Bartnicki for the sixth UNE tally.
The Hawks capped the scoring in the 60th minute on a marker Sydney McCarthy, with the help of Jenna Clavette.
Mya Lunn totaled six saves for the home team in the setback.
Nicole Schena made four stops the rest of the way for the Nor'easters.
