Early 3rd period barrage carries Colby past UNE

Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College scored three times in the opening 5:11 of the third period to break open a tie game on its way to a 7-4 win over the University of New England in non-conference men's ice hockey action Tuesday evening (Jan. 26) at Alfond Rink.

With the score tied 3-3 after two periods, the Mules (6-8-4) pulled away in the early stages of the final frame when Cam MacDonald, Mario Benicky and Jonathan Sdao notched consecutive goals. After Joe Admirand tallied his first collegiate marker on a rebound with six minutes remaining, Alex Walsh would add an empty-net goal at 18:52 to cap the scoring.

UNE (11-6-2) led 2-1 after a period, as Tucker Ross and Tom Gildersleeve sandwiched goals around one from Colby's Devin Albert.

Jack Burton and EJ Rauseo found the back of the net in the opening 8:30 of the second period to put Colby on top, but Ross scored again with 2:26 on the clock to tie the contest, 3-3. The Mules, who led 34-23 in shots on goal for the game, had a 23-15 margin in that category over the first two frames.

Emerson Verrier totaled 19 stops to register his sixth positive decision of the season. Mason Riley finished with 27 saves for the Nor'easters.

UNE will face a stiff test this Friday and Saturday with a pair of New England Hockey Conference road games versus nationally-ranked foes. The Nor'easters face No. 6/8 Babson College on Friday and No. 8/9 UMass Boston the following afternoon.
