Emily Corrales had a hat-trick, and the University of New England withstood a Manhattanville College rally in the third period to take a 5-4 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) win in women's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon (Jan. 16) at the Playland Ice Casino.
The win gave the Nor'easters (8-5-2, 3-4-1 NEHC) a sweep of their weekend road trip after Friday night's shutout of Salve Regina University. The Valiants dropped to 5-8-0 overall, 3-5-0 in NEHC play.
After UNE opened up a 1-0 first-period advantage on a goal by
Kimberly Gosselin, the Nor'easters exploded for four second-period markers to assume control of the contest. Corrales scored her first of the afternoon just 1:08 into the frame, but that was offset by a Manhattanville goal by Taryn Harris five minutes later. Corrales then scored back-to-back goals at 6:52 and 12:48, giving her a hat-trick in the stanza and pushing the Nor'easters' cushion to 4-1.
Marissa Clifford-Biederman would score just 14 seconds later to make the score 5-1 in favor of the visitors.Â
The Valiants made things interesting in the last 10 minutes of the final period, however, scoring three times. Cassandra Kent (10:37), Katherine Reilly (15:59) and Lindsay Diot (17:56) got Manhattanville within one (5-4) with just over two minutes to play, but the Valiants were unable to complete the comeback.
For the game, Manhattanville held a 35-28 advantage in shots on goal, including a 14-7 edge in the final period.Â
Sydney Helmbrecht recorded 31 saves for UNE, while Olivia Drew and Rose Pijaca combined to make nine stops for Manhattanville.
The Nor'easters look to run their unbeaten string to five next Friday when they host Nichols College at 4 p.m.
