Nor'easters close strong to top St. Michael's, 4-1

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The University of New England scored three unanswered goals in the final period to break open a tight game and take a 4-1 win over host Saint Michael's College in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's game Saturday afternoon (Jan. 16) at Cairns Arena.

With the win the Nor'easters (10-4-2, 6-4-1 NEHC) match s school record for wins in a season, tying their 10-win season of 2013-14. UNE also stretched its unbeaten streak to double digits (10) -- the third-longest current string in the nation.

With the score tied 1-1, UNE took the lead for good when Kyle Williams scored on a power play at the 12:19 mark. Tucker Ross and Dylan Bengston assisted on the goal. Danny Antonoff would make it 3-1 just over a minute later, stuffing home a rebound of his own shot. Cassidy April then followed at 16:09, completing the Nor'easters' three-goal barrage off assists from Blaise Healy and Tom Gildersleeve.

UNE's Jackson Tucker opened the scoring in the first period, converting a loose puck at 16:15 for his first collegiate goal. Ben Pearl and Tony Crow set-up the play.

The Purple Knights tied the game 3:50 into the second frame when Nic Hermary put a shot just under the crossbar after Sam D'Antuono had won a face-off in SMC's offensive zone.

Mason Riley recorded his second win in less than 24 hours, stopping 34 shots between the pipes for UNE. Chris Johnson had 40 saves for Saint Michael's (4-12-0, 4-11-0).

The Nor'easters will play a non-conference road game at Bowdoin College on Tuesday. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
