Emily Corrales and
Shannon Smith scored third-period goals to help the University of New England rally for a 3-3 overtime tie with Colby College in a women's ice hockey game played Tuesday night (Jan. 12) at Alfond Rink.
Down a pair heading into the third, UNE (6-5-2) closed to within one early in the frame when Corrales notched her fourth of the season off an assist from
Shannon Reynolds. The Nor'easters would drawn even midway through the period on Smith's tally.
Gabby Crugnale and
Marissa Clifford-Biederman were credited with assists on the play.
UNE had a chance to win the game in overtime, but Colby goaltender Jess Thulin came up with a nifty glove save on a scoring bid by
Annie Mullen with just under a minute remaining on the clock.
The Mules (4-6-3) had built a 3-1 lead after two periods, thanks in part to a 29-18 margin in shots on goal during that duration. Sarah Fritts scored just 23 seconds into the contest for Colby, but that goal was offset by an unassisted short-handed tally by Clifford-Biederman at the 17:10 mark. Colby's McLaughlin sisters gave the Mules a 3-1 advantage in the middle frame, with Mikayla scoring on the power play at the 16-minute mark and Katie following with less than a minute to go.
For the game Colby led in shots, 44-30.Â
Sydney Helmbrecht totaled 41 saves for UNE, while Thulin finished with 27 for the Mules.
The Nor'easters will take to the road this Friday and Saturday for a pair of New England Hockey Conference tilts. UNE faces Salve Regina University on Friday and Manhattanville College Saturday.Â
