Nor'easters open season with 5th-place finish

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The University of New England men's cross country team placed fifth out of eight entries at the season-opening Shacklette Invitational hosted by Saint Anselm College Saturday morning (Sept. 5).

Stonehill College totaled 38 points to win the event, which was comprised of seven NCAA II teams and the Division III Nor'easters. Southern New Hampshire University (56) was second, followed by American International University (66), Merrimack College (72), and then UNE (130).

CJ Vallie was the first Big Blue runner to cross the finish line, recording a time of 27:39 to place 24th. He was followed closely by Peter LePage and Paul Mangiafico, who placed 27th and 28th, respectively, with times of 27:57 and 28:03.

UNE's other scoring competitors were Matthew Toussaint (35th, 28:23) and Caleb Pulliam (37th, 28:32).

The Nor'easters host their own event next Saturday. The UNE Invitational will start at 11:30 a.m. at Rotary Park in Biddeford.
