OAKLAND, Maine -- Paul Butkevich posted a 1-over-par 71 to claim the medalist honor and lead the University of New England men's golf team to a third place showing at the season-opening University of Maine Farmington Invitational, played Thursday (Sep. 3) at Waterville Country Club. The Nor'easters' team total of 300 was two strokes out of first place.

Saint Joseph's College took the top spot with a score of 298, followed by the University of Southern Maine at 299. After Big Blue, UMF (305) and Maine Maritime Academy (321) rounded out the field of five varsity squads.

Butkevich's career-best round was good for his first collegiate win individually, and the first victory by a UNE player since Owen Lennon '03 captured a pair of events in 2003. Butkevich's score was one better than USM's Alex Carroll (72).

Sam Kinasewich tied for third with a 73 to support the Nor'easters. Ryan Mahoney matched his personal low with a 75 and Garrett Krisko carded an 81 to close out the UNE total. Mike Rich recorded an 83.

UNE gets back to work on Tuesday at Point Sebago Golf Club for the John Queenan Memorial hosted by St. Joe's.
