BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England scored a trio of markers while holding Western New England University shotless in the 1st half, on the way to a 4-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey victory on Saturday (Sep. 19) at the Big Blue Turf.

UNE (5-2, 2-0 CCC) has now defeated the Golden Bears (3-2, 0-1 CCC) in each of the 13 all-time meetings.

It took the Nor'easters a little more than 15 minutes to get on the scoreboard, as Desirae LeBlanc carried possession into the right side of the offensive zone and pushed it towards Vonde Saunders, who tipped it into the corner.

Just 57 seconds later on a penalty corner play, Nicole Matarozzo put one through the five-hole from the left side of the circle off a no-look feed from Brooke Marshall.

The hosts increased the margin to 3-0 with 54 ticks left in the opening period, when Matarozzo slipped a leading pass around the last defender to Abbey Rouillard in the circle for a blistering drive into the left side of the cage for her first collegiate goal.

Matarozzo netted another goal in the 51st minute, making a steal and a 40 yard run past the back line and around the goalie to guide the ball into the net.

With less than seven minutes remaining, Western New England broke up the shutout bid as Emily Antinozzi moved up the right side on a break and drilled a shot just inside the near post from the edge of the circle.

The disparity in shots finished at 20-3, after UNE led 14-0 in the category during the initial 35 minutes. Holly Smith did not record a save to earn the decision for the Nor'easters, while Grace Trupe made seven stops on the other end for the Golden Bears.

Both sides will continue CCC play on Tuesday, as UNE visits Endicott College (7 p.m.) and Western New England entertains Gordon College (4 p.m.).
