Gordon rallies late to edge Nor'easters, 15-14

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. -- Jessica Castelline scored three of her team's five goals in the final 13:24, including what proved to be the game-winner with 47 seconds remaining, as Gordon College finished strong to squeak past the University of New England, 15-14, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular-season finale Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 22) at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

The win puts the Fighting Scots (10-7) as the No. 4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament with a 5-3 league mark. GC will, once again, host the No. 5 Nor'easters (7-9, 4-4 CCC) on Saturday, as the championship begins with the first round of matchups.

After surrendering the opening score to Gordon, Hannah Warren tallied all three of her markers in a seven-goal UNE charge before the midway point of the 1st half. The scoreboard favored the visitors, with an 11-6 margin, at the break.

The Fighting Scots pulled to within two (11-9, 12-10) during the initial stages of the 2nd period but still trailed 13-10 following a goal (16:26) by Big Blue's Macki Hill.

Castelline set-up Abby Illian to start the late surge (13:24), before getting the deficit down to one with her third of five goals on the day at the 10:01 mark. With 9:06 to play, Illian had tied things up at 13-13.

A free-position try from Hill found the back of the cage (7:02) to restore UNE's slim advantage, but Castelline converted another equalizer with 2:47 to go.

The Nor'easters gained the ensuing draw, but three turnovers left Gordon with possession and Castelline scored again (0:47). The Fighting Scots secured the next draw and maintained control for 35 seconds before coughing it up deep in the offensive zone. UNE hurried the length of the field in the waning seconds but could not connect for a shot attempt before the clock expired.

Bailey Grinnell contributed four goals for the hosts, and three more came from Caroline Walton, who combined with Illian for eight draw controls. Jackie Kiernan logged seven saves.

Gina Newsome and Jessica Deedon joined Warren with three scores for the Big Blue attack. In addition to a pair of goals, Rachel Schwaner corralled seven draws. Between the pipes, Courtney Kendall made nine stops during the opening 30 minutes and the last 19:09, conceding 11 goals to the opponent.
