Wellesley finishes strong to clip UNE, 10-8

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Claire Canty and first-year Jenny Gubner scored 20 seconds apart with less than six minutes to play as Wellesley College turned around a one-goal deficit for a 10-8 win over the University of New England in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon (Mar. 7) at the Big Blue Turf.

With the Nor'easters extending their press in the final moments, sophomore Nikki Sharkin matched Gubner's three-goal output with an insurance marker.

The Blue (1-0) also received a pair of goals from senior Meghan Peterson, who contributed four draws to a 12-7 Wellesley edge in the category. Canty recorded a game-best six draw controls.

For UNE, senior Gina Newsome and sophomore Jocelyn Davee had two goals apiece. Seniors Jessica Deedon, Macki Hill, and Rachel Schwaner, along with junior Amelie Petersen, accounted for the rest of the scoring.

A 3-0 start by Wellesley was countered by three in-a-row from the Nor'easters, but Peterson found the back of the cage with 8.7 seconds left in the 1st half to give the visitors a slim edge.

After falling behind, 6-4, early in the 2nd, Davee bookended a three-goal push by UNE in 2:30 to swing the lead with 19:29 remaining.

Chesley Hooker evened things to the Blue at the 17:19 mark, but Deedon restored the narrow cushion (8-7) for the hosts with 9:15 on the clock.

For Wellesley, which has its home-opener on Wednesday against Lasell College, sophomore Wendy Nettleton made six saves.

Junior goalie Lauryn Huck turned aside nine for the Nor'easters. UNE visits No. 5 Colby College on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
