Golden Bears use 9-0 run to separate from UNE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Western New England University broke away from a tied game with a nine unanswered goals in a span of 10:03 during the 1st half to gain control on the way to a 20-8 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's lacrosse victory over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 28) at Golden Bear Stadium.

WNE improves to 7-1 (2-0 CCC) with the win, while the Nor'easters drop back to 3-6 (1-1 CCC).

Kaitlynn Stevens led the attack with seven goals and two assists, to go with a game-high seven draw controls. Brooke Kumnick added five scores, with Jessica Scannapieco contributing four and Tori Cirocco three. Taylor Scialdone tallied five assists.

For UNE, Gina Newsome scored three times and Macki Hill registered two. Jessica Deedon had a team-high four draws and Johanna Currier picked up a game-best five ground balls.

Shots were 37-27 in favor of the Golden Bears, who never trailed in the match and received three goals apiece from Stevens, Kumnick, and Cirocco during the deciding run. Western New England held a 14-4 cushion at the break.

WNE, which heads to Gordon College (2-1 CCC) on Tuesday, got 12 saves out of Emily Castleman.

Lauryn Huck and Courtney Kendall made two and eight stops, respectively, for the Nor'easters. UNE visits Nichols College (0-2 CCC) on Thursday.
