Nor'easters storm away with victory over Bears

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Trailing by 6-3 with 10:31 left in the 1st period, the University of New England notched 12 of the next 15 goals to defeat Bridgewater State University, 15-9, in women's lacrosse action Friday afternoon (Mar. 13) at Swenson Field.

The Nor'easters (2-3) went into halftime on a 5-1 run to gain the edge, and led the rest of the way.

Gina Newsome had three goals and an assist to pace Big Blue, and Jessica Deedon also recorded three scores. Rachel Schwaner, Nikki Smith, and Jocelyn Davee each added a pair, while Mack Hill, Hannah Warren, and Olivia Madore contributed one marker apiece.

UNE, which out-shot its opponent by a 35-26 margin, received 11 saves out of Lauryn Huck (4) and Courtney Kendall (7). Schwaner and Warren both had four draw controls to help give the Nor'easters the slight advantage (14-12) in the category.

The Bears (1-2) were powered by Melissa Renauld, Marissa Yowell, and Riley Cachelin, who combined for eight of the team's goals and four of five assists. Lauren Geary, who also scored for BSU, controlled five draws, and Allie Forman turned in 17 saves defending the cage.

Tied at 2-2 through nine minutes, Bridgewater State moved to a three-goal cushion over the middle portion of the initial frame.

Davee then struck for both of her tallies and Smith posted her first as UNE knotted things up. Renauld and Smith traded scores before Schwaner struck with 0:05 remaining to put the visitors in front (8-7) at the break.

Newsome and Deedon went back-and-forth to begin the 2nd half, extending the Nor'easters' lead to 12-7 by the midway mark and UNE never looked back.

Big Blue will now head to Kissimmee, Florida to face SUNY Oswego (Tuesday) and No. 13 SUNY Geneseo (Wednesday).
