Top-seeded Norwich pulls away in 3rd for 6-0 win

NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The top-seeded Norwich University women's ice hockey team scored four times in the final period to break open a tight contest on its way to a 6-0 shutout of the University of New England in an ECAC Women's East Championship quarterfinal-round game played Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.

Maki Shuchuk notched a hat-trick in the decisive third period to lead the Cadets (19-4-3) to victory. Rachel Bellio scored in the first period for Norwich, Erin Joyce tallied a second-period marker, and Adelle Murphy scored the opening goal of the third frame.

Norwich -- ranked fourth in one national poll and fifth in another -- held a commanding 41-7 in shots on goal. Winning goaltender Celeste Robert recorded five saves in 46:01 of playing time before giving way to Laurie King, who added a pair to complete the team shutout.

Starting netminder Sydney Helmbrecht totaled 30 stops over the initial 50:12 for UNE (6-15-5). Samantha Scobee came off the bench and turned aside five shots on goal.

Last year's national runner-up, the Cadets will host the semifinals and finals next Saturday and Sunday.
