1st period barrage propels UNE past NEC, 5-1

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters scored four times in the opening period on their way to a 5-1 win over New England College in an ECAC Women's East ice hockey game played Friday afternoon (Feb. 20) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Sophomore Emily Corrales had a pair of goals to lead the offense for UNE (5-14-5, 2-11-3 ECAC). Classmates Melissa Boudreau and Mary Wirth and first-year Annie Mullen each scored once. Sophomore Kimberly Gosselin dished out three assists and Mullen set-up two markers.

For the Pilgrims (1-22-1, 1-14-1), rookie Taylor Rassicone notched her first collegiate goal to prevent NEC from being shut out.

With her team on a power play, Boudreau got the Nor'easters on the board at 6:35 of the first when she converted from the low slot. Less than a minute later, Wirth double Big Blue's advantage, stuffing the puck home from the top of the crease. UNE would make it 3-0 at 12:17 of the frame when Gosselin broke in from the neutral zone and found Corrales, who one-timed Gosselin's feed. Mullen increased the Nor'easters' lead to 4-0 with just over a minute remaining, pushing in a shot by first-year Alexis Hall that was trickling towards the goal line.

UNE more than doubled (13-6) the Pilgrims' shot output in the opening 20 minutes.

The Nor'easters utilized a two-player advantage to make the score 5-0 midway thru the second. Gosselin slid a pass across the slot from the right circle to Corrales, who lifted it top shelf on the backhand. Corrales' nifty play pushed her season goal total to double digits.

Rassicone notched the lone goal of the final period, re-directing a slap shot from straight away by senior Ashley Bonner.

Sophomore Sydney Helmbrecht stopped 21 of 22 shots to earn the win between the pipes for UNE. Her counterpart, senior Lauren Hopps, totaled 31 saves for NEC.

Both teams conclude their regular season tomorrow. UNE skates at UMass Boston at 1 p.m., and the Pilgrims head to Castleton State College for a 3 p.m. contest.
